Fa la sua prima apparizione reale in ''[[DP100|Dare una mano al nemico!]]'', mentre riposa insieme agli altri Pokémon di Paul.

Magmar was finally shown battling in Paul's match against [[Pyramid King Brandon]] in ''[[DP128|A Pyramiding Rage!]]''. It was the first Pokémon chosen by Paul to battle him. He quickly recalled it after he saw Brandon chose {{DL|Brandon's Regis|Regirock}} to battle it. He sent it out again to battle {{DL|Brandon's Regis|Registeel}}. Registeel was able to shrug off Flamethrower with little difficulty and struck with {{m|Iron Head}}, not causing much damage but Magmar [[flinching|flinched]] and couldn't use Will-O-Wisp. Paul recalled Magmar but after all of Paul's other Pokémon were defeated, Paul sent out Magmar to battle Regirock again, who absorbed Flamethrower and took Magmar out with {{m|Shock Wave}}.
 
Magmar lo si vede finalmente lottare nell'incontro tra Paul e [[Baldo]] in ''[[DP128|Scontro nella Piramide Lotta!]]''. É il primo Pokémon scelto da Paul per il match. Lo richiama velocemente dopo aver visto che Baldo ha scelto {{DL|Regis di Baldo|Regirock}} per affrontarlo. Lo rimanda in campo contro {{DL|Regis di Baldo|Registeel}}, che riesce a scrollarsi di dosso Lanciafiamme senza alcuna difficoltà e lo colpisce con {{m|Metaltestata}}, non infliggendo molti danni a Magmar ma [[Tentennamento|facendolo tentennare]] così che non possa usare Fuocofatuo. Paul richiama Magmar ma, dopo che tutti i suoi altri Pokémon sono stati sconfitti, è costretto a usarlo di nuovo contro Regirock, che assorbe Lanciafiamme e lo sconfigge con {{m|Ondashock}}.
Magmar's evolution was revealed in ''[[DP131|A tutto Coraggio!]]'' when Paul chose Magmortar to battle [[Ash's Pikachu]]. They begun the battle in ''[[DP132|Evolving Strategies!]]'', where Pikachu got badly {{DL|Status ailment|burn}}ed because of Magmortar's {{a|Flame Body}}. Magmortar's powerful Flamethrower blocked Pikachu's {{m|Thunderbolt}} and it then cleverly used {{m|Rock Tomb}} to damage Pikachu during its {{m|Volt Tackle}}. Magmortar used {{m|Smog}} in an attempt to choke Pikachu but this was blocked by [[Counter Shield]]. However, Pikachu's attempt to follow up with {{m|Iron Tail}} did not cause nearly enough damage to Magmortar, and Ash recalled it for {{AP|Buizel}}.

Despite the type disadvantage, Magmortar was able to hold its own, managing to carry on after a direct hit from {{m|Aqua Jet}}. It then used a wall of Rock Tombs to block {{m|Water Pulse}}, which turned out to be a distraction as whilst Buizel blasted through easily, Magmortar had vanished. Magmortar is considered to be one of Paul's trusted Pokémon in terms of strategies for his battles. Beginning in ''[[DP132|EvolvingStrategie Strategiesin Evoluzione!]]'', it had the ability to take in any attacks that was delivered including the ones that would have been super effective against Magmortar.
