He appeared when {{Tracey}} tried to pull his flower hat off his head, thinking that they were just flowers growing in the ground. Gulzar got angry and said that he is the greatest {{type|Grass}} {{pkmn|Trainer}} in the [[Orange Archipelago|Orange Islands]]. However, in Tracey's defense, {{Ash}} discussed with Gulzar. Angered by this, he challenged Ash to a {{pkmn|battle}}.

After Gulzar sent out his {{p|Gloom}}, Ash tried to send his {{AP|Charizard}}, but ended up sending his {{AP|Squirtle}}, followed by his {{AP|Snorlax}}. However, Snorlax's [[Poké Ball]] broke, forcing Ash to use it in the battle. When Snorlax woke up, it tried to eat Gulzar's Gloom, and then it ate Gulzar's flower hat and his lunch.

After Ash and Snorlax defeated [[Team Rocket]], Gulzar realized that Ash was a strong trainer, and gained respect for him.
 
Gulzar scappa, ma riappare più tardi quando Ash ed i {{ashfr}} cercano di andare al [[Centro Pokémon]] dell'isola. Il {{TRT}}, però, prova a rubare le scorte di [[Cibo Pokémon]] del Centro; dopo che Ash e Snorlax li sconfiggono, Gulzar realizza che Ash è un Allenatore veramente forte, e comincia a rispettarlo.
