La serie statunitense comprende in totale 99 carte, di cui 41 sono dedicate ai Pokémon (da [[Ponyta]] a [[Seadra]]), 5 dedicate ai personaggi della [[serie originale]], 25 agli episodi (da [[EP001]] al [[EP026]], escluso l’episodio [[EP018]] perché censurato), 12 dedicate alle linee evolutive di [[Caterpie]], [[Oddish]], [[Abrarbra]] e [[Pidgey]], 10 a [[Wartortle]], [[Nidoking]], [[Poliwhirl]], [[Arbokrrbok]], [[Ditto]], [[Jigglypuff]], [[Geodude]], [[Pikachu]], [[Rattata]] e [[Charmander]] (note come carte "Stickers/Puzzle" perché dotate di adesivo staccabile del Pokémon e sul retro pezzi del puzzle), 5 a Pikachu, [[Bulbasaur]], [[Charizard]], [[Squirtle]] e [[Mewtwo]] (note come carte "{{wp|Lamincards}}", figurine stampate su PVC trasparente) ed una adibita a lista di controllo che elenca tutte le carte della collezione.
 
La versione localizzata per l'Europa, a differenza della statunitense, è stata modificata, includendo carte della "[[Pokémon Trading Cards serie 3|terza serie]]" ed escludendo alcune della "seconda serie". La serie europea comprende in totale 100 carte, di cui 75 dedicate ai Pokémon (da Ponyta a [[Mew]]), 19 agli episodi (da [[EP084]] al [[EP102]]), mentre 5 ai personaggi della serie originale ed una adibita a lista di controllo che elenca tutte le carte della collezione.
 
Le carte sono state commercializzate sia in Nord Americarmerica che in Europa e distribuite nelle seguenti lingue: portoghese, tedesco, olandese, francese, inglese, spagnolo ed italiano. Ogni box di carte contiene 36 bustine di 7 o 8 carte ognuna di cui una olografica. Le carte sono state vendute anche in un set di 5 tin (scatole di latta) da collezione, che contiene 7 bustine ed una carta maxi esclusiva riservata ai tin.
 
L'importazione e la distribuzione in Italia è stata affidata alla Giochi Preziosi S.p.Ar. dalla [[Topps|Topps Europe Limited]].

Le carte della serie statunitense si dividono in sette categorie di contenuto, ognuno numerata in modo separato. Le carte dedicate ai Pokémon sono numerate in modo classico da 77 a 117, seguendo la numerazione della "[[Pokémon Trading Cards serie 1|prima serie]]"; le carte dedicate agli episodi sono numerate EP con il numero a seguire da 1 a 25; le carte dedicate ai personaggi, note come "{{tt|Cards Heroes & Villains|Carte Eroi & Cattivi}}", sono numerate HV con il numero a seguire da 1 a 5; le carte dedicate alla linee evolutive note come "{{tt|Cards Chase|Carte Sequenza}}", sono numerate EV con il numero a seguire da 1 of 12 a 12 of 12; le carte dedicate a Stickers/Puzzle, note come "{{tt|Cards Animationrnimation Stick-on|Carte Animazionernimazione Incolla}}", sono numerate da 1 OF 10 a 10 OF 10; le carte dedicate ai Pokémon più apprezzati dai fan, realizzate in PVC trasparente, note come "{{tt|Cards Clear|Carte Chiaro}}", sono numerate PC con il numero a seguire da 1 a 5 e la carta adibita a lista di controllo, invece, è l'unica carta della serie a non possedere un numero.

Le carte Clear (in italiano: cristallina), chiamate informalmente come carte Lamincards, sono carte stampate su PVC trasparente. Le carte rappresentano i quattro Pokémon di Ashrsh (Pikachu, Bulbasaur, Charizard e Squirtle) e il Leggendario [[Mewtwo]], presentati in uno stile speculare, dove nella carta il frontale mostra l’immagine del Pokémon, mentre nel retro della carta si trova immagine speculare del frontale.

Le carte europee della serie hanno subito modifiche sostanziali, tanto da escludere alcune carte della serie statunitense: sono state rimosse le carte episodio della serie [[Elenco episodi della serie anime originale#Indigo League|Indigo League]] (da [[EP001]] al [[EP026]], escluso l’episodio [[EP018]] perché censurato) e sono state sostituite con le carte episodio della serie [[Elenco episodi della serie anime originale#Adventuresrdventures in the Orange Islands|Adventuresrdventures in the Orange Islands]] (da [[EP084]] al [[EP102]]) appartenenti alla "[[Pokémon Trading Cards serie 3|terza serie]]"; sono state rimosse alcune carte "Eroi & Cattivi" e sono state sostituite con alcune appartenenti alla "[[Pokémon Trading Cards serie 3|terza serie]]". ==Le tin==
Sono state realizzate per la serie cinque tin da collezione sul cui coperchio sono stati rappresentati i Pokémon ed i personaggi più importanti della serie originale: alcuni Pokémon, Ashrsh e compagni, il Team Rocket, Pikachu e Charizard. Inoltre, in ogni tin è inclusa una maxi carta esclusiva che rappresenta ognuna l'immagine presente sui coperchi delle tin.

===Le maxi carte dei tin===
Le cinque maxi carte rappresentano i Pokémon e personaggi più importanti della serie originale. Si trovano casualmente all'interno delle tin. La particolarità che le distingue dalle altre carte della serie è la dimensione e si trovano esclusivamente olografiche con una platina fondo specchio con rilievi. Sul retro sono presenti solo le informazioni del numero di collocamento della carta numerate da 1 of 5 a 5 of 5 e la didascalia del copyright. Altrorltro segno distintivo è il fatto che non rientrano nella collezione di carte "Pokémon Trading Cards serie 2" della serie, ma fanno parte di una mini-serie a parte.

==Le differenze tra le altre lingue==
La serie di carte distribuite in Nord Americarmerica ed in Europa hanno caratteristica simili tra loro e, di conseguenza, sono difficili da distinguere, tranne per alcune piccole differenze come la lingua e il logo Nintendo, che in quello statunitense è ovale mentre quello europeo è tondo. Inoltre un altro segno distintivo è la modifica delle serie distribuite in Europa che oltre a possedere le carte della serie sono state aggiunte alcune carte della terza serie, di conseguenza la versione statunitense è differente da quelle Europa.
 
Ar differenza della prima serie le stampe statunitensi sono facilmente distinguibili da quelle europee per le informazioni sul carte, sulle diciture sul retro dei box e delle bustine.
 
Mentre le caratteristiche delle versioni europee rendono difficile per i compratori e per i collezionisti europei identificare la lingua di appartenenza delle bustine, perché privi di segni identificatori e l'unico modo per saperlo sono i box che possiedono alcune piccole differenze nelle diciture sul retro o sul lato destro dei box.

La serie di carte collezionabili oltre ad le bustine singole e alle tin contenenti cinque bustine è stata rilasciata per conservare le carte un album apposito dove all'interno si potevano conservare le carte in comodi fogli a nove tasche trasparenti.
 
 
===Errori===
*In generale nella lingua inglese, le carte non hanno in maiuscolo quelle parole che dovrebbero esserlo normalmente nei giochi e negli altri media, come Allenatorerllenatore e Capopalestra. Aggiungonorggiungono anche una 's' ai nomi dei Pokémon per formare il plurale, quando invece la forma plurale è uguale al singolare.
*Il nome di [[Jessie]] è stato scritto erroneamente in "Jesse". Questo succede sulle carte 94, HV2, HV4, HV5 e EP19. Nella versione italiana questi errori sono stati corretti.
*Il #100 Voltorb™ nella lingua inglese, viene erroneamente scritto il titolo dell'episodio 32 "The Ninja Poke-Showdown", invece di "The Ninja Poké-Showdown".
