{{2v2|Oro|Argento}} sono i giochi più aspettati della storia Pokémon, per le innovazioni introdotte nella serie. {{gioco|Cristallo}}, uscito più tardi delle altre due versioni, inziò a focalizzare la serie sui {{f|Pokémon Leggendar|io|i}} della regione dove sono ambientati, portandoli dentro le trame dei giochi. A causa di questi miglioramenti, la seconda generazione è quella più acclamata dai fan. Diversamente dai giochi futuri, questa generazione è stata concepita come sequel dei vecchi giochi, e per questo è stata molto criticata.
La seconda generazione risulta essere più rivolta alla mitologia delle altre. Tutti i Pokémon inziali non acquistano un secondo tipo, come almeno uno di ogni generazione fa (ad esempio [[Bulbasaur]] è già Erba/Veleno senza evoluzioni e [[Tepig]] acquista il {{tipo2|Lotta}} quando si evolve in [[Pignite]]), rimanendo nel tema Acqua > Erba > Fuoco come tutti i Pokémon iniziali di ogni regione.
 
La seconda generazione è stata la prima a mettere enfasi sui Pokémon leggendari facendoli diventare delle leggende, un contrasto forte con [[Mewtwo]] e gli uccelli leggendari. [[Amarantopoli]] è quella più in evidenza dato che è la casa delle leggende su [[Ho-Oh]], le [[Bestie leggendarie]] e [[Torre Bruciata|la loro casa]]. In {{v2|Cristallo}} [[Suicune]], a differenza degli altri due era inevitabile per finire il gioco, così come per [[Lugia]] e [[Ho-Oh]] nei remake. Persino l'incatturabile [[Celebi]] era riferito come il "Guardiano delle Foreste".

[[Ecruteak City]] fleshed out the legends of [[Ho-Oh]] and [[legendary beasts|the three beasts]], their relationship with one another and the story behind their departure (the [[Burned Tower]]). [[Suicune]] was, unlike [[Raikou]] and [[Entei]], unavoidable in Crystal Version if the player wanted to beat the game; the remakes HeartGold and SoulSilver give the same treatment to Ho-Oh and [[Lugia]] respectively. Lugia was also glimpsed by an elderly man in Ecruteak City, and others, who stated it looked like a drago in the sky. Even the uncatchable [[Celebi]] was mentioned as the "Forest's Protector" at the shrine in [[Ilex Forest]].
