Fin dal 1998 in Giappone (dal 2000 in Italia), ogni anno è stato rilasciato un film Pokémon, spesso incentrato su un [[Pokémon leggendari]]o o [[Pokémon misteriosi|misterioso]]. Questi film hanno quasi sempre riscontrato un grande successo in Giappone, ma anche negli {{pminpkmn|negli Stati Uniti}} e in altri Paesi del mondo, con alcuni messi in onda come speciali televisivi, il primo con una grande distribuzione cinematografica ed altri usciti solo in formato fisico.
 
I film non vengono considerati da tutti come canone dello show. Questa supposizione deriva dal fatto che {{Ash}} ed i {{ashfr}} non sembrano essere toccati nella serie principale dagli eventi dei film, che tendono ad avere parecchio pericolo o dramma. Altri, invece, vedono i film come una sorta di [[Episodio filler|episodi filler]], dato che nessuna delle loro [[Squadra|squadre]] cambia e non viene battuto alcun [[Capopalestra]] o vinta una [[Gara Pokémon]]. Questa probabilmente è la corretta interpretazione, dato che non solo molti degli eventi delle pellicole vengono citate almeno perifericamente nello show ma, anche, diversi eventi degli episodi ''maggiori'' sono stati dimenticati dagli autori negli episodi successivi.
