All'inizio del gioco, il giocatore viene sottoposto ad un quiz. Le risposte a queste domande determinano una natura, la quale decide con quale Pokémon il giocatore inzierà il gioco. Alcuni personaggi sono disponibili solo per giocatori di un certo sesso.

Una volta determinato il personaggio del giocatore, viene scelto il Pokémon partner. Il partner può essere uno qualsiasi dei personaggi giocabili mostrati qui sopra, escluso il personaggio dei giocatore. Inoltre, il partner non può essere dello stesso [[tipo]] del giocatore.
