Si basa su [[Pokémon Rosso e Blu|Pokémon Rosso, Blu]] e [[Pokémon Verde|Verde]], con Pokémon di [[prima generazione]] e i [[Capipalestra]] della regione di [[Kanto]]. L'espansione inglese è stata rilasciata il 16 ottobre 2000, mentre l'espansione giapponese è stata rilasciata il 25 giugno 1999. È stato deciso di escludere anche la carta ''{{tt|_____'s Chansey|Chansey di _____}}'' per via della regola non scritta del GCC europeo e statunitense che non prevede la pubblicazione di carte Pokémon con un proprietario in bianco. L'unica eccezione è stata fatta per la carta promozionale [[Pikachu di_____ (Wizards Promo 24)|Pikachu di_____]].
Due carte presentano illustrazioni diverse nella versione inglese e in quella giapponese in quanto ritenute "inappropriate". {{GCC ID|Gym Challenge|Koga's Ninja Trick|115}} originariamente aveva una {{wp|svastica}} che assomigliava alla svastica usata dai nazisti, ed è stata cambiata con un simbolo diverso. In {{GCC ID|Gym Challenge|Misty's Tears|118}} originariamente Misty era disegnata nuda, ed è stata cambiata in uno Squirtle che cerca di impedire alle lacrime di Misty di cadere.
*Tra il relativo set giapponese e l'espansione inglese, ci sono state alcune modifiche per quanto riguarda gli artwork di alcune carte, ritenuti "inadeguati" da [[Wizards of the Coast]].
