In Giappone, venne rilasciata come '''Expansion Pack''', la prima espansione della ''ADV Era'' del Gioco di Carte Collezionabili Pokémon. Basata sui videogiochi [[Pokémon Rubino e Zaffiro]], l'espansione introduce i Pokémon di [[terza generazione]] nel gioco di carte. Le espansioni italiana ed inglese sono state rilasciate il 18 giugno 2003. mentre l'espansione giapponese è stata rilasciata il 31 gennaio 2003.

EX Rubino & Zaffiro introduce i {{GCC|Pokémon-ex}}, un tipo di Pokémon. I Pokémon-ex sono Pokémon significativamente più forti. Quando un Pokémon-ex viene messo K.O., l'avversario prende due {{GCC|Carta Premio}} invece di uno. I Pokémon-ex hanno bordi olografici.

EX Rubino e Zaffiro ha anche introdotto un design aggiornato delle carte, che includeva numerose modifiche.
